This session is comprised of three components:
Component #1 – Internet Freedom Under Rouhani: The session will open with a 15 minute presentation assessing the current state of Internet freedom in Iran under President Hassan Rouhani’s administration.
This opening presentation will be heavily based upon Small Media’s existing series of monthly reports documenting Iranian Internet policy and infrastructure development, and the accompanying podcasts, Filterwatch. We will discuss developments in policy under President Rouhani, and judge the greatest advances and reversals in Internet freedom over the past four years.
Component #2 – Future Prospects for Internet Freedom: In this part of the session we will spend 30 minutes discussing likely developments in Iranian Internet policy as the 2017 presidential election approaches. This discussion will be partly based on the initial results of Small Media’s upcoming research project focusing on social media usage ahead of the elections. We will discuss this topic in partnership with a number of other Internet freedom organisations. Confirmed speakers and guests include:
