|2017 theme||Journalism & Media|
Women journalists have witnessed an escalation in online abuse over the past several years, not just in numbers, but also in methods and sophistication. New tactics like digital blackmailing, swatting and doxxing add to the already horrific array of tools to harass and intimidate women online. For women journalists, the digital environment has become increasingly hostile posing tangible threats to their mental and physical health. Women experience roughly three times as many abusive comments as their male counterparts on Twitter. Attacks on women journalists must be addressed as a serious challenge to freedom of expression because the intention is clearly to scare and silence women from speaking publicly.
In the workshop we will explore together innovative ways of dealing with online sexual & gender based violence (SGBV) attacks against women journalists. We will discuss holistic approaches to on- and offline threats and talk about tactics and strategies to counter trolls and online harassers effectively.
Since there is no easy solution to this problem, the objective of the workshop is to explore existing approaches, think about new ways to tackle the issue and, if desired, to share stories and experience
